The Benifits of a Cleaner Pond

An excessive build up of organic sediments can show its hindrance to pond life in several ways.

Too much sediment will rob the water of oxygen and increase the levels of carbon dioxide, methane, sulphides, and ammonia.

By reducing the amount of muck, we can also reduce the levels of these toxins and give the water a chance to hold more oxygen. This will result in healthier fish and aquatic life.

A distinct odour may be present, and is often accompanied by a dark water tone. By excessive muck, the gasses from decomposing material are reduced, thereby reducing or eliminating odour. This will also cut down on the amount of suspended material, which will often give the water better clarity. Excessive muck will very hinder or completely plug fresh water springs in the base of the pond. This will often affect the water level of the pond, leaving some ponds several feet lower than where they should be. By cleaning the area of the pond that has the most spring activity a good water level can again be achieved.

And most importantly the pond will again have a source of fresh water and added circulation.

This is very important for certain types of fish as well as the overall health of the pond.

Organic sediment is very nutrient rich. It can be compared to a extremely productive fertilizer. As this builds up the perfect conditions are created for the overgrowth of plants.

By cleaning the bottom and removing these nutrients, plant growth will often recede or stop completely, generally leaving a firm clean bottom (depending upon the bottom composition). If the water is being treated with chemicals for plant or algae growth, removing the excessive muck will often reduce the amount of chemicals needed for control and make the treatments much more effective.

Between October and March your waterfall and filter system should be switched off for the winter period, to allow your fish to go dormant because if you do not switch these off, after the cold water season your fish are more prone to get parasites, fin rot and white spot which can kill your fish and contaminate the your pond.

Some people have the view that by leaving the pond the same all year round will have no effect on your fish, believe us, it does, because, if you leave your waterfall running through the winter, the water at the bottom of the pond is below freezing and that is why, the fish cannot go dormant and this is when they lose their immune system come spring time when the water starts to warm up.

Should you have any concerns relating to this, Elite Pond can come on site and either treat your fish or the pond, depending on how far the infection has spread.
