How deep does the pond need to be for keeping Koi?

The minimum requirement is 3ft - 4ft deep this ensures that the Koi have room to move to the bottom of the bottom the pond during winter and allows pressure which also allows for the fish to grow.

What filter systems and pumps should I use?

This depends if it is a ground level pond or a Koi pond, we suggest a bottom drain with either a Nexus filter system or a Bubblebead filter as they are much easier to maintain and clean which ensures that bacteria is kept under control.

I have recently been told that I should turn everything off for the winter, is this true?

This is true; you must turn your Filter, Pump and UV off and let your fish go dormant for the winter. You do not feed your fish at all through the winter months. If you keep them running all through the winter you are keeping the cold water circulating so your fish are fighting against their immune system that is when they are prone to get diseases.

Is it true we should have our pond regularly cleaned out? We have had our pond for 7 years now and it has never been done?

Yes you should have your pond cleaned at least every 2 years. There are an awful lot of diseases caused by dirty water in ponds which can make you ill.

I have a pond that is in direct sunlight, my water is constantly green. Why is this?

It could be a number of things. Have you got any coverage over the pond? (i.e. pond plants such has Lilies). Have you got a UV light on your system, if not you need one? If you have a UV, when did you last change your bulb? They need changing every six months.

My friend has just built a pond by themselves, now cracks have started to appear in the brick work. Can you help?

Has your friend done the pond in single brick work, if so they to do another course of block work inside of it, and tie them in. Your friend will have a lot of pressure of water and doing a pond in just single brick will just collapse under the pressure in time.

How do I know if I am getting my pond professionally built?

Always ask to see evidence of previous work that they have done and ask to contact previous customers. Ask what professional governing bodies they belong to and check it out.

What chemical should I use for green water?

For green water use a chemical called Green Away. For blanket weed use a chemical called Clove Leaf. For putting new water in your pond use a chemical called Water Safe.

What size UV should I have in my pond?

This depends on the size of your pond. If you email us with some basic information about your pond. We would let you know what we would recommend.

Why do my fish always destroy the plants in the pond?

This is done out of boredom, especially if you have Kio, they are know for being destructive. Throw a lettuce into your pond and they will nuzzle at it and hopefully leave the plants alone.
